Are the routes guided?

The routes are usually self-guided. However, there is also the option of joining a group that we organise with a qualified professional guide, giving you an extra touch to your route and enjoying a great experience.

Is my membership card valid for discounts?

In order to benefit from the federated discounts it is necessary that you have the FEDME extension as a correspondence of refuges.

What time of the year is it possible to do the High Route of the Lost?

The season starts at the beginning of June and ends at the end of September. However, you should bear in mind that crampons and ice axes are usually needed at the beginning of the season.

When do you need crampons and ice axes?

Normally there is still snow on the high passes until mid-July and they are necessary. We inform you about the conditions on the mountain and whether they are necessary or not before starting the route. We also publish it on our social networks.

Where can I rent crampons and ice axes?

You can rent them in Bujaruelo at a special rtrekker price. If you only need them for the ascent of the Vignemale, because the rest of the route is snow-free, you can rent them at the Bayssellance Mountain Hut. Please consult the organisation in these cases as we also take care of the booking.

Are the map and tracks included?

Yes, they are included when you book with us.

What is the security device?

It is a geolocator device to be used in case of emergency. You don't need to call 112 or worry if you have coverage.

Can I use the security device as a GPS?  

No, it is for emergency use only. You will need to bring your own GPS or use a mobile app. We will send you the official track so you can follow it.  

Is the start of the route to Bujaruelo easy to reach by car, where can I park my vehicle?

To get to the Bujaruelo Mountain Hut you have to go along a track that cars can drive on. Once you get there, you can leave your car parked for the whole route in the place indicated by the Mountain Hut guards.

Can the route be done in both directions?

Yes, it is possible to do it both ways as the differences are very small. The direction we propose may be more aesthetic at some point.

Is there mobile phone coverage on the route?

There is very little coverage along the whole route: some points in Ordesa, near the Pineta Mountain Hut, in the Gavarnie area and some points in Bujaruelo depending on the company.

Is it possible to charge mobile phones, gps, cameras, etc.?

You can charge your devices in all the Mountain Huts. Rangers will tell you where and how to do this, as there may be charging schedules. Charging is slow in the high altitude huts.

Is there water on the road?

There are springs and streams along the route. However, although the water is very pure, it is advisable to use water purification tablets because there may be cattle in the mountains.

When do I have to book?

There are mountain huts along the route that are very busy, so it is best to book as far in advance as possible. We usually open seasonal bookings in mid-January.

Is the route signposted?

The route does not have any specific signposting, however it runs along a large part of the GR11 and GR10, so you will find white and red markings in the area. There are some points that require special attention, but we will inform you about these in detail in the explanatory talk.

How long are the stages?

The times are approximate but  from 8-10 hours. Bear in mind that the cold, the heat, the conditions of the terrain, your physical condition at the time or even stops can increase this schedule.

In which shelters can I take a shower?

It is possible to take a hot shower in all the refuges, except in Espuguettes and Bayssellance which do not have shower facilities. For various reasons, showers may not be available in some refuges, but this is a one-off event and is the responsibility of each refuge. It is not the responsibility of the Haute Route.

Can I do the routes with children?

The distance between the Mountain Huts and the accumulated difference in altitude in each stage do not make this route suitable for children. However, this depends on the stamina, physical preparation and motivation in each individual case.

Can we do the Haute Route des Perdues with dogs?

Animals are not allowed inside the Mountain Huts. In the Ordesa National Park, current regulations require dogs to be kept on a leash at all times. In the French Pyrenees Park, dogs are not allowed (not even on a leash), subject to a financial penalty. For these reasons it is not possible to do the Alta Ruta with dogs.

Is camping or bivouacking possible?

The organised route includes accommodation and meals in all the shelters along the route. If you have to make a bivouac in case of emergency, you have to inform the organisation.

Is there public wifi in shelters?

The only Mountain Hut where you will find wifi available is Bujaruelo. In the rest of the Mountain Huts there is no wifi and in many of them there is no coverage either.

What happens if I have a food restriction?

It is advisable to communicate dietary restrictions in advance so that the Mountain Huts can take this into account, as resources may be limited. We will take care of this if you let us know at the time of booking. Vegan menu is not possible but vegetarian menu is possible.

Is it possible to pay by card in the shelters?

In most Mountain Huts it is not possible to pay by card, so it is advisable to carry cash.

Is it possible to wash clothes?

In most shelters there are no specific laundry facilities or clotheslines.

Can hair dryers or electric brushes be used?

In general this is not possible. Some shelters operate with photovoltaic installations or generate their own electricity and capacities are limited.

Can we arrive at any time?

In many shelters dinner time is at 7pm, so we ask you to arrive before 6pm so that you can enjoy a welcome drink, settle into your room, shower and rest before dinner.

Is it possible to book picnics for the route?

Picnics do not need to be booked in advance. Once you arrive at the hut and check in, it is time to order picnics for the next day and pay for them directly, so it is necessary to bring enough cash for that.

Is there a possibility to transport the luggage/backpack?

This option is not possible. You must carry your backpack with you for the entire route.

What should I do in the event of an accident?

The emergency notification will be made through the "Garmin Inreach Mini" geolocator security device, which we will give you in Bujaruelo and we will teach you how to use it. If you are in a Mountain Hut, the rangers will manage the emergency and will contact us. If you are travelling in a group and someone has suffered an accident, it is important that you do not leave them alone until the rescue team arrives.

Why should I book the trekking with you?

We advise, help and accompany you before and during your route. The organisation takes care of everything, making reservations at the Mountain Huts, making changes if necessary, sending you the tracks, the map, giving you all kinds of information about the route and informing you about the mountain conditions. Our satellite geolocation service allows you to go to the mountain with security and peace of mind, as this is an area where there is very little mobile coverage. In addition to all this, we have a wonderful welcome pack together with an informative talk where we go over the route and solve last minute doubts, all accompanied by a snack. We take care of everything, so that you enjoy yourself and all you have to do is walk.

What is included in the welcome pack?

The welcome pack is delivered at Refugio de Bujaruelo. Official Ternua thermal T-shirt, official Alpina map of the route, lunch pack for your first day of the route, shower voucher in Bujaruelo for the day you finish the trek, welcome drink in all the refuges of the route, Ternua digital voucher of 50 € for purchases in their online store valid until 31/12/2023 (*) and a 0.5 liter jug filled in Bujaruelo at the end of the trek. Forfait to be stamped in the refuges.

early cancellationif you have cashed the Ternua digital voucher of 50 € in their online store you will have an additional penalty of 50 €. Check our early cancellation insurance to benefit from its coverage.

Where will I find the stamp in each Mountain Hut to mark my Alta Ruta pass?

You can get it stamped at the reception desk of each shelter.

Is a sleeping bag necessary?

You can bring a sleeping bag, as the shelters have blankets if you need them.

How are the bedrooms distributed?

In the refuges the rooms are shared. La Alta Ruta does not manage the refuges, each one is managed independently.

What if the weather is bad?

The organisation cannot be held responsible for adverse weather conditions. In the event of a weather alert that puts your safety in the mountains at risk, the organisation will contact you to find a solution. Under no circumstances will the organisation pay for an extra night in a refuge if this should be necessary.

What if I have to be notified by my relatives because of an emergency?

You can leave them the Alta Ruta contact and let the organisation know beforehand. We know where you are at any given moment and we will locate you to let you know just in case. If you have to abandon the route, we will tell you the best option.

It is a geolocator device to be used in case of emergency. You don't need to call 112 or worry if you have coverage. We will take care of everything for you as we have your exact location. We will explain how to use it in the explanatory talk at the beginning of the route.

Is it easy to get to the start of the route? Where can I park my vehicle during the route?

The car can be parked in the car park Els Empedrats, Cal Cerdanyola next to the nature room  called La Salle Natura (municipality of Gisclareny). From Barcelona it takes about 1h 45 min. 

Can the route be done in both directions?

No.

Is there mobile phone coverage on the route?

In general it is possible to call 112 on most of the route, however, coverage depends on each telephone company. All Mountain Huts have wifi, which is included if you book with us. 

Is it possible to charge mobile phones, gps, cameras, etc.?

You can charge your devices in all the Mountain Huts. Rangers will tell you where and how to do this, as there may be charging schedules. Charging is slow in the high altitude huts.

Is there water on the road?

Some streams can be found but there are very few springs. It is advisable to use water purification tablets because there may be cattle in the mountains. It is best to fill your water bottles at the Mountain Huts for the whole route.

The schedule is approximate and each stage has its own relative timetable in the description on our website. Bear in mind that the cold, the heat, the conditions of the terrain, your physical condition at that moment or even the stops may cause this timetable to increase.

In which shelters can I take a shower?

Showers are possible in all shelters.

Can we do the routes with children?  

The distance between the Mountain Huts and the accumulated difference in altitude in each stage do not make this route suitable for children. However, this depends on the endurance, physical preparation and motivation in each particular case.

Can we do the Alta Ruta of Cadí with dogs?

The shelters do not accept animals inside and do not have a specific place for them. The Natural Park has its own regulations and they must be kept on a leash at all times. For these reasons it is not possible to do the Alta Ruta with our dogs.

The vehicle can be parked in the large parking lot of the Conangles ref. From Barcelona it costs approximately 4 hours.
